Friday, 8th October will see some 97 lots of medals and related militaria come under that hammer at Stafforshire auction house Cuttlestones’ Collectors’ Sale. Items date from both the WWII and WWII conflicts and include firearms, cap badges, bronze busts of pilots and individual medals.
There is also a strong set of lots in the form of a series of medal packs each of which, in addition to a collection of medals, includes detailed research into the life of the serviceman to whom they were awarded (such as photographs, death certificates, service histories and conflict accounts) all consigned by a single private collector.
Just one example of the lots in this carefully collated collection is a series of medals and ephemera related to Flight Sergeant Trevor Thomas Turnbull. The lot comprises Sgt Turnbull’s medals – including the France & Germany Star, a Defence Medal, a DFM George I, a DFM in box of issue and a 1939 – 1945 war medal – alongside two photographs, his navigation logbook, release book and some additional research. While this individual lot carries an estimate of between £2,600 – £2,900 estimates for all lots within the medals and militaria section range from £10 – £3,500 meaning there’s something for all collectors.
MD & Head Auctioneer at Cuttlestones, Ben Gamble, says:
“This is a really strong military section and we’re delighted to be able to present this to buyers at our first official Collectors’ Sale. It represents a rare opportunity to procure an entire collection that someone has evidently invested great amounts of time and money to amass and will undoubtedly attract interest from collectors of medals and militaria from far and wide. Those less knowledgeable about military history but with a more general passion for antiques may be interested to hear that we also have some ‘caterpillar club’ badges in the militaria section, as recently featured on the BBC’s Antiques Roadshow.”
The sale will take place at Cuttlestones’ sale room in Penkridge, Staffordshire from 10am on Friday, 8th October 2010, with viewing from 10am – 7pm on Thursday, 7th October. The catalogue will be available online from Friday, 1st October – visit http://www.cuttlestones.co.uk or call 01785 714905 for further details. For those unable to attend the sale commission, telephone and online bidding via www.the-saleroom.co.uk are available.
