The Other Film Festival

This is Australia’s only disability film festival with movies by, with and about people with a disability. This year boasts an exceptional program of both Australian and International films. Guest filmmakers and presenters will bring unprecedented perspectives from Germany, Greece, Canada and beyond. The Other Film Festival offers accessibility for all patrons, including captioning, audio description, sign interpreting and many other access services.

Fringe Furniture 2008

In this year’s Fringe Furniture exhibition, Australian designers explore how we personalise and make our own mark on the objects and furnishings we use in our daily lives. As artists, designers, viewers and users of furniture and object design - what is your mark?

Presented as part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival 2008.

Design Now!

Do you ever wonder what the next big thing in design will be? What are the best emerging ideas and trends? See the designs of Australia’s young design graduates who have competed with fellow students to exhibit their work in Design Now! The group of 18 finalists represent the best and freshest upcoming designers in Australia, selected from over 120 nominees from 21 Australian universities.

Design Now! is presented by Object Gallery with major sponsor Living Edge.

Bombay Sapphire Design Discovery Award Exhibition 2007

Selected from over sixty of Australia’s finest contemporary designers, the ten finalists from the 2007 Bombay Sapphire Design Discovery Award present groundbreaking contemporary designs in lighting, furniture, accessories, and homewares. The award is considered Australia’s most prestigious design award and offers financial assistance in the form of a $30,000 scholarship as well as a trip to the Milan Furniture Fair.

“Ngathook mangnoorroo watanoo” (”I come from…”): Couzens family exhibition

Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre at Melbourne Museum will host an exhibition revealing the unique, collective story of the Couzens family clan. Featuring paintings, photos and objects from four generations of the family, the exhibition explores their history and relationships with each other - offering a reflection on Aboriginal identity and culture.

Hatching the Past: Dinosaur Eggs and Babies

What came first, the dinosaur or the egg? Take an exciting look at the life of dinosaurs through their eggs, nests and embryos. Never before seen in Australia, the exhibition features over 130 dinosaur egg casts, 15 complete articulated dinosaur cast skeletons and life-sized models as well as baby chickens, alligators and other live exhibits. Fossils collected from all over the world include a bowling ball-sized egg of a titanosaur from Argentina and the longest dinosaur eggs ever discovered-those of the oviraptor, a carnivorous, ostrich-like dinosaur discovered in Central China.

The Melbourne Story

The largest exhibition ever developed by Museum Victoria, The Melbourne Story, reveals Melbourne’s unique and changing tale. The Melbourne Story features more than 1200 objects from Museum Victoria’s collections, making it the most complete and object-rich exhibition about Melbourne ever staged. The exhibition features iconic objects from Melbourne’s history such as a historic bark canoe from the Yarra River, a restored Cobb & Co coach, a carriage from the Luna Park Big Dipper and the much-loved ‘Little Men’ from Coles’ Book Arcade.

Inspiring Scientists
Come along and meet inspiring scientists from a range and career backgrounds. Talk to an expert in marine science, biomedical research and engineering and find out what exciting and varied opportunities a career in science has to offer.

Behind the Scenes tours

See deep sea fish, rare crystals, ancient fossils and more in this rare opportunity to tour some of Museum Victoria’s science collections with a Museum scientist.

Time: 11.00am, 12.30, 2.00 & 3.30pm

Bring in a…

Ever come across something while bushwalking or gardening that has stumped you completely? Bring in a bug, bone, fossil or feather that you have found and make use of Museum Victoria’s expertise and free identification services at the Discovery Centre, Melbourne Museum during National Science Week 2008.

Not the Nobel Prize

A lot of science facts sound a bit strange (to say the least) when you say them out loud. A panel of Australian comedians will tackle a variety of weird and wonderful science topics with some fact and some fiction. They’ll wind their way through fact and fiction until your head is spinning and it’s up to you, the audience, to pick the difference.

Science Lounge

Sit back, relax and find out about all things science at the hub of Museum Victoria’s Science Week. Find out about science week events, learn something new and who knows - you may even meet a Museum scientist!
