| Tom Lecky, Head of Books and Manuscripts of New York comments: “The superb results of Important Scientific Books: The Richard Green Library, with many books not seen on the market for decades, confirmed the strength of the scientific field, and more than doubled presale expectations. The highlight of the sale was the exceedingly fine copy of Nicolaus Copernicus’s De revolutionibus, 1543, which made a world auction record of $2.2 million against an estimate of $900,000-1,200,000. The sale established records for numerous authors, including Galileo and Pedro de Medina, and achieved a remarkable result for a major work from the modern era: Alan Turing’s “On Computable Numbers,” 1936, realizing an astounding $182,500 against an estimate of $20,000-30,000. Garnering immense international press coverage was the 1878 New Haven Telephone Directory which sold for $170,500 against an estimate of $30,000-40,000.” | |
