What’s On - Design at Melbourne Museum May to July 2008

Through its Designed to Inspire program, Melbourne Museum offers public recognition of the work of talented emerging and practicing designers. The role of the museum is to increase design literacy in the general public, to broaden national and international awareness of the quality and diversity of contemporary Australian design, and to enhance Victoria as a centre of design excellence.

AGIdeas NewStar

The AGIdeas NewStar Award is an opportunity for emerging Australian designers to enhance their design career by winning one of three International travelling scholarships to Europe, UK, South Africa or the USA. In 2008 designers were asked to submit their creative interpretation of the quote “The mind is like a parachute, it works best when open” (Anthony J. D’Angelo). The short listed entries, ranging from multimedia, 2D or 3D works, are featured at Melbourne Museum.

Top Designs 2008

Be inspired and motivated by the creativity and skills of the best design works from Victoria’s final year VCE secondary school design students. Students’ works range from film, furniture, fashion and graphic design to mechanics, photography, publishing and food. Top Designs 2008 also features the development of the final product. View folios, work briefs, production stages, product evaluations and design plans. Presented in partnership with the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority as part of the VCE Season of Excellence.

INNOVIC’s Next Big Thing Award

This exhibition will display the 21 finalist’s innovations from the annual nation-wide competition to find and showcase new and exciting Australian products. With the potential to become the ‘next big thing’, this year’s finalists include a robotic golf caddy, face recognition technology, a round tennis table for three and environmentally friendly concrete.

Launch Pad

Showcasing the best emerging design prototypes, the Launch Pad exhibition from InDesign magazine provides a platform to encourage and promote Australian design by giving emerging designers access to a network of commercial suppliers, manufacturers and media.

Premier’s Design Awards 2008

The Premier’s Design Awards is a biennial awards program developed by the Victorian State Government to recognise design excellence in Victoria and is one of the key features of the State of Design 2008 Festival; Victoria’s Design Festival. The Premier’s Design Awards 2008 exhibition will showcase all winning designs and will range from various fields including architecture, interior design, graphic design, multimedia design, landscape design, fashion design, set design and industrial design.

Design Now!

Do you ever wonder what the next big thing in design will be? What are the best emerging ideas and trends? See the designs of Australia’s young design graduates who have competed with fellow students to exhibit their work in Design Now! The group of 18 finalists represent the best and freshest upcoming designers in Australia, selected from over 120 nominees from 21 Australian universities.

Design Now! is presented by Object Gallery with Major Sponsor Living Edge.

Bombay Sapphire Design Discovery Award Exhibition 2007

Selected from over sixty of Australia’s finest contemporary designers, the ten finalists from the 2007 Bombay Sapphire Design Discovery Award present groundbreaking contemporary designs in lighting, furniture, accessories, and homewares. The award is considered Australia’s most prestigious design award and offers financial assistance in the form of a $30,000 scholarship as well as a trip to the Milan Furniture Fair.
