Ebay Fights Back with New Promotion
Several months ago, I wrote a Blog about what I thought eBay was going to do. First I said they might do away with the listing fees all together, but instead, they raised them in a very deceptive manner after their leader left. I think now they are […]

Following Sotheby’s record-breaking sale of Magnificent Jewels in New York last December, Sotheby’s spring sale of Magnificent Jewels in New York on April 17, 2008 will offer examples of the highest quality white and colored diamonds and an exceptional selection of signed jewelry, including both classically styled and contemporary pieces. The sale will also feature spectacular Van Cleef & Arpels jewels from the Estate of Rita K. Hillman, a distinguished New York philanthropist with exquisite taste in fine art and jewelry. The 389 lots being offered in two catalogues for this two-session sale at 10am and 2pm will be on exhibition at Sotheby’s New York from April 11 through April 17.
The star lot of April’s jewelry auction is a magnificent Diamond Ring, Harry Winston, The Property of a Lady, Sold to Benefit a Charitable Foundation, featuring an emerald-cut diamond weighing 24.42 carats. This diamond ring (lot 381, est. $1.8/2.5 million), mounted in platinum, is flanked by tapered baguette diamonds. It is of exceptional D color and potentially flawless clarity and falls into the rare category of type 11a, which includes the most chemically pure and colorless stones.

On May 22, 2008, Sotheby’s is proud to offer a masterpiece of American 19th century painting, The Peaceable Kingdom with the Leopard of Serenity, by the most celebrated American folk art artist, Edward Hicks. Arguably one of the most important and beautifully preserved examples of the more than sixty-two versions of this profound subject painted by the artist, this work boasts an exceptional provenance, which includes the artist’s great-granddaughter, Mabel Willets Abendroth, and her son, William P. Abendroth, Jr. Later sold to Kennedy Galleries, New York, it was acquired by a private collector and has been exhibited at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, as well as at the American Folk Art Museum, New York, where it has been on view since 2000. This iconic work will be offered in a separate single lot sale immediately following the auction of American Paintings, Drawings and Sculpture and is estimated to sell for $6/8 million.

On the evening of May 14, 2008, Sotheby’s sale of Contemporary Art in New York will feature a masterpiece of the 20th century, Francis Bacon’s Triptych, 1976, the most important work by the artist in private hands. A masterwork of the first order, the potent concentration of imagery in Triptych, 1976, provokes a wide range of possible interpretations in a painting which matches the tragic grandeur of Aeschylus. Triptych, 1976, was the centrepiece of the artist’s most important show of new work of the 1970s, held at the Galerie Claude Bernard in Paris in 1977, which closely documented Bacon’s unease and restless mind during that time. One of only three large-format triptychs in the Bernard exhibition, it was illustrated on the cover of the catalogue. Acquired by the present owner at that time, it has been included in all the major surveys of the artist’s work to date, including the Tate Gallery, London, in 1985; Museo d’Arte Moderna, Lugano, in 1993; and the Musée National d’Art Moderne Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, in 1996. In the catalogue from the Museo d’Arte Moderna exhibition, Francis Bacon, 1993, Michael Peppiatt says, “Triptych, 1976, surely ranks among the greatest of Bacon’s paintings” (p. 106). The work is being offered from a Private European Collection and is estimated to bring in the region of $70 million
