RARE DRAWING BY DANIEL GARBER TO AUCTION AT RAGO’S IN FEBRUARY

New to Market. Descended in Family. Proceeds benefit James A. Michener Art Museum. Lambertville, NJ: Drawings by Daniel Garber - a mainstay of the Pennsylvania Impressionist group of painters and one of the most significant and decorated artists of his generation – rarely come to market. An exceptionally rare, fine and large drawing will be auctioned on February 8, 2008 at Rago’s. Portrait of Elsa Laubach, ca. 1910, is a 21 ½ by 15 ¼ charcoal on paper (#D168 in the catalogue raisonné) that has remained with the Garber family since its execution. An exceptionally fine draftsman, Daniel Garber (1880-1958) taught drawing at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts for four decades and his drawings from the PAFA archives are used as a teaching tool for students to this day. Rarely do they come to market; most are closely held. This property will be sold in support of the James A. Michener Art Museum in Doylestown, PA and its Centennial Campaign to fund critical capital improvements. A major show of Garber’s work, Daniel Garber; Romantic Realist, was jointly organized and exhibited in early 2007 by the James A. Michener Art Museum and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
