The National Knife Museum, Inc. is a non-profit, 501-c-3, educational corporation, founded in 1981, by the members of the National Knife Collectors Association (est. in 1972). Our “New” Museum opened on November 29th, 2006, on the mezzanine level of Smoky Mtn Knife Works in Sevierville, Tennessee. Our original Museum was located In Chattanooga, Tennessee. We do not charge admission; therefore we encourage people of all ages to visit us, absolutely FREE of charge, and learn about the history of cutlery! Our new Museum offers many exciting and educational exhibits and can be enjoyed by people of all ages!
The National Knife Museum provides the opportunity for the viewing public to be made aware of the major role played by cutlery in the development of human cultures world-wide. The principal exhibit, “The Cutlery Time-Line,” provides the visitor a million-year walk with the “knife” revealing its importance as the most important human made tool, highlighting some major cutlery developments and events along the way.
The American Cutlery industry was founded mainly by the English and German immigrates from the early 19th to mid-20th centuries. These early skilled European cutlers were the providers of cutlery to our colonies. Our Museum exhibits present a historic context of knives during this time period. Exotic cutlery from around the world is noted in several displays to help increase awareness of cutlery from many different cultures. Additionally, custom, handmade knives are also exhibited, representing some of the most advanced forms of knifemaking, design, and artistry of some of our earliest custom knifemakers.
To enhance our visitors’ scope, television/DVD units are provided along the “time-line” and also placed along other strategic locations, including our “Little Theater,” a demonstration area, a library (viewed by appointment only), and other amenities that illustrate the historic importance of the KNIFE and its continued importance in our everyday lives.
It is noted the Museum is supported entirely by donations; any monetary gifts are greatly appreciated. We depend and rely on these donations to support the Museum staff, maintenance of the collections, and equipment, as well as the development of new and exciting exhibits.
Thank you for visiting our “NEW” National Knife Museum and we appreciate your continued dedication and support!
